A social network about which we speak little, and which in morocco has little importance. But he has an undeniable influence and is very often the source of the content, which is endless Reddit is a community and social site with an interesting side that provides information and content on just about everything. At first glance, its interface and proprietary code may put off beginners. This means depriving yourself of a treasure trove of often relevant information, a very particular vision of news and entertainment, and an endless rain of memes! Here's a quick definition, an explanation of how it works, and a few subreddits that I think are important. Share your favorite subreddits with us in the comments!
Reddit: history and definitions of the platform
create
In October 2006, Condé Nast acquired this website. She publishes among others Ars Technica, Vogue, Wired, The New Yorker and Vanity Fair.
User Generated Content and Subreddits
The principles of Reddit (read it) are simple and have not changed since the platform was created. Suggested content is UGC (user generated content) and you can vote for or against each user's post. Of course, a positive rating increases the post, a negative rating decreases it, and you lose it on the Limbo site. The content is organized into subreddits, which are further organized into categories. There are generic subreddits with a lot of subscribers (Photos, History, Ama, Video Games...) and subreddits that are as bizarre as they are original (even completely twisted). Examples of subreddits illustrating the endless possibilities of the site: /r/ggggg (dedicated to the letter G), /r/cableporn (dedicated to neat cable, cable is a real passion among Redditors), /r /enlightenedbirdmen (a subreddit imagining a war between birds and humans).
cover
The great thing about Reddit is the "home page" which brings together all the subreddits you subscribe to. If you don't have an account and aren't logged in, the information is pulled from the main subreddit, giving you a good overview of what's appearing on the web and in the news. As a whole, Reddit covers LOL pictures, memes, breaking news, science news, web news, video games and movie culture, not to mention GIFs and pictures. Everything you see on the front page has been rated positively by Redditors. Any registered user can vote and upload content.
Reddit is a plethora of communities inherent in this form of organization. Volunteer moderators ensure that individual subreddit rules are followed. However, there's a lot of tension between users and Reddit executives right now. Reddit is growing and seems to be against defamatory and racist content. Pixels. Number of uses
In terms of usage, Reddit has 36 million user accounts and was visited by 195 million unique users from 215 countries last month. Most impressive is the number of page views in July, which is 8,064,678,112. In ten years, there were 16,063,942,290 upvotes and 190,227,552 posts. Finally, note that the platform is very desktop oriented and does not have an official application. However, some third-party apps such as Alien Blue still provide a very smooth mobile experience.
essential language elements
As you can see, it's not easy to sum up Reddit in one word, especially since the network has a unique code that you won't find anywhere else. Reddit does not have likes or hashtags, but a very specific glossary:
- Ama (Ask Me Anything): One of Reddit's coolest features. Celebrities such as Stephen Hawking, Ronda Rousey, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Obama regularly answer people's questions on their own subreddit. The questions with the most votes go up and personalities can answer them.
- ELI5 (Explain as if I was 5): Sometimes Redditors ask me to teach complex concepts (global warming, religion, time travel, etc.) like a 5 year old. A great way to understand certain concepts in areas that are not ours.
- Imgur: Imgur is an image hosting service primarily used by Reddit and can be considered a social network in its own right.
- OP: The original poster is the person who posts the image or content on reddit. Another Redditor comments on the OP.
- TIL - What I learned today: Some threads start with this formula, often followed by historical facts, details and surprising anecdotes. TIL's publications are always an opportunity to be surprised!
- NSFL/NSFW: It's hard to talk about reddit without talking about NSFL (scary, hurt and dead) and NSFW (often sexual content) content. Reddit is also very crappy and clearly content-oriented.
- Karma: Karma points are earned for positive posts and comments, as well as certain actions. But the magic of reddit is that those karma points are completely useless.
- Mods: Moderators of various subreddits tasked with avoiding certain content. Each sub has specific posting rules.
The Essential Pro subreddit
Let's be honest, Reddit is mostly endless entertainment. A journey into the depths of the Internet at its worst, funniest and most beautiful. all of this at once. Once 'tamed', the platform becomes an integral part of our online lives. But if you laugh a lot on Reddit, you'll learn a lot there too. Especially when it comes to web culture. For example, topics like net neutrality are not discussed in France (apart from a few rare sources), but they occupy a prominent place on Reddit. You'll also find a wealth of information, tips, and productivity advice on web, advertising, and social media news. Below is a short list of subreddits to follow.
/r/technology: Probably one of the most famous subreddits, but also one of the most important for web workers. Here you'll find the latest news from the web (and technology in the broadest sense) and real talk about the future of the web. We need 5.2 million subscribers. /r/productivity: Find productivity tips and tools, or tricks to help you stay organized.
/r/entrepreneur: A discussion space on real entrepreneurship where links are prohibited. We receive a lot of questions and learn interesting things from “real” entrepreneurs.
/r/jobs: General Employment Subreddit - Tips for Finding a Job, Quitting, Resuming... If you have questions about employment, you'll find plenty of resources in this section. /r/startups: If you are interested in the startup ecosystem, this subreddit will give you a good overview. Specific topics are addressed and many startups share more or less successful experiences.
/r/Marketing: Here you will find content sharing related to marketing and web marketing.
/r/web-design: Web design resources, including news, resources, tools, questions.
/r/Advertising: A subreddit that shares articles, resources or questions about advertising in general. To be completed with /r/adporn which offers a summary of the best advertisements in the world, and where there are excellent creations.
/r/SEO: as its name suggests, a thread dedicated to SEO and the practices of industry professionals.
/r/SocialMedia: social media news and questions as well as some feedback that may be worth the detour.
/r/DataIsBeautiful: not always very useful but so interesting that it deserves to be in this list! You will find data viz on many different subjects.
