Google's new tool 'Rising Retail Categories' gives you visibility into fast-growing product searches
This is the first time Google has published this kind of data.
Earlier this month, Google announced the release of Rising Retail Categories, a new Think With Google tool. This is a time when searches for flour, baking supplies, board games, and face masks are at all-time highs. With more people at home and more people searching online, Google sees an opportunity to give marketers more insight.
The tool works like a product-focused version of his Google Trends, showing how search intent for different product categories has increased over time. Users can view a list of top trending categories for a given country sorted by weekly, monthly, or yearly growth rate.
Provides insight into consumer demand. In the current crisis, product search is a dynamic and rapidly evolving field, according to Google. As such, the company is introducing what it calls “Rising Retail Categories” within his ThinkWithGoogle domain. In a blog post announcing the new tool, Google said it was "looking for more insight into how consumer interests are changing as consumer demand dynamically fluctuates." We're hearing from vendors and brand manufacturing partners."
Fast growing categories and searches. Similar to Google Trends, Rising Retail Categories shows "fastest growing product-related categories", relevant searches, and regions where product categories are trending the most. Google adds, "This is the first time we've provided this kind of insight into the product categories people are searching for."
Data are available for the US, UK, and Australia. Drop-down menus allow users to view the most popular products and searches by week, month, or year. According to Google, the data is updated daily. In its blog post, Google provided several use cases for the data, including content creation, advertising, and product development. The data is certainly interesting, but limited despite Google's explanation that it is being presented for the first time.
why you care. Rising Retail Categories is one of several search data-driven tools and resources available on ThinkWithGoogle. Microsoft releases search trends by industry during COVID-19. There are also several SaaS and martech companies that are keeping up with e-commerce trends and shopping inquiries. However, they generally do not offer free research to the public.
There are also keyword research tools that can generate useful data about product searches, but they don't provide such information. Product trend data from Google's booming retail category may seem relatively modest, but choosing brands his marketers and small businesses can be interesting and helpful.
